Auto Insurance Company Reviews

Last Updated on October 7, 2026

Are you trying to find the right auto insurance company this year? This page is our A–Z index of car insurance reviews. It covers the big national brands, regional mutuals, nonstandard writers and a handful of quote-comparison sites, so a name being on the list does not mean it sells in your state or that it is a national option.

Click any name below to read our review. Reviews typically cover company background, available discounts, average rate patterns, coverage options, industry ratings (where available), and customer experience signals. Every company here was checked against its own site, its regulator or its filings in October 2026, and whatever we found is printed next to the name: the states it sells in, who owns it now, or that you cannot buy from it any more. The sections under the list explain the ones that changed hands or closed, and the ones that turned out not to be insurance companies.

Brands That Have Changed Hands or Closed

Some names in the list above are brands you can no longer buy and some now sell in only one state. We keep the reviews for people who still hold the policies or are researching the history. The ones that were never insurance companies are in the next section. As of October 5, 2026:

Sixteen more of the names on the list need explaining. Here is where each one stands:

  • Two are gone, and their policyholders were cancelled rather than moved. 1st Auto and Casualty was liquidated by a Wisconsin court order effective January 1, 2024, with policies ending within fifteen days. Adirondack Insurance Exchange wrote only in New York and gave notice in July 2024 that it was winding down, ceasing coverage at the end of that year. There was no insolvency in the Adirondack case, so there is no guaranty-association claim to make.
  • Five healthy companies have left personal auto. Main Street America now lists only commercial, surety and farm and ranch lines after narrowing to commercial in 2024. Omni surrendered its Arizona certificate of authority on November 15, 2023 and went inactive in Missouri in November 2024. Republic Group left personal lines in 2020, when AmTrust agreed to move the book to Safeco across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and New Mexico. Sentry still underwrites personal auto, and none of it carries the Sentry name. Its own about page says personal lines are “now sold entirely under The General brand”, though the group sells personal auto as Dairyland as well. And Prudential has not underwritten auto since it sold its property and casualty business in 2003; a Prudential-branded policy in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania is written by Plymouth Rock companies, not by Prudential.
  • Five more are brand names whose policies live on somewhere else. American National is retiring that name for property and casualty in favor of Farm Family. Alliance United is gone from Kemper’s own list of underwriting companies and the business is sold as Kemper Auto. Say was Shelter’s direct brand and Shelter has stopped selling through it. Wawanesa was renamed W Insurance and is now a California-only subsidiary of the Automobile Club. Workmen’s Auto became Orion Indemnity Company on August 19, 2021 under Mercury General. In every one of these cases the policies are fine; only the name on them changed.
  • Two were never consumer brands. Security National is a Bristol West underwriting company inside Farmers, licensed in Florida and Texas, and Trumbull is the company The Hartford uses to write AARP auto in Massachusetts. Neither can be bought by name.
  • Two do not sell personal auto today. National Continental is a Progressive commercial company: the New York examination report describes liability and physical damage “for automobiles and trucks owned by small businesses”. It did carry individual drivers once, as the service carrier for New Jersey’s Special Automobile Insurance Plan, and the same report dates the end of that: “On December 31, 2022, the SAIP expired and was non-renewed.” Allianz is a large insurer, but its only US car product is the OneTrip Rental Car Protector, which covers a rental car and never a car you own.

Quote Sites, Agencies and Brokers

These twenty-six names are in the list above and none of them is an insurance company. Some are comparison sites that pass your details to carriers, some are storefront or online agencies that place you with a carrier, and Gabi now trades as Experian Insurance Services. Whatever you buy through them is underwritten by somebody else, so the carrier behind the quote is the thing to ask about:

Acceptance, Access Auto Insurance, AIS Insurance, A-MAX, Amigo Insurance, Baja Auto Insurance, Cost-U-Less, Duck Duck Auto, Estrella Insurance, Fiesta Insurance, Freedom National, Freeway, Gabi, Good2Go, InsureOne, Insurify, Jerry, Kelly Klee, Otto Insurance, Oxford Auto Insurance, Pronto, Rodney D. Young, Savvy, SmartFinancial, United Auto Insurance, Value Penguin.

None of this makes them bad places to shop. An agency with thirty carriers behind it can be a good way to find a price. It matters because clicking one of these names does not take you to an insurer.

AAA is a different case and belongs in neither group. It is a federation of regional motor clubs, and the club covering your address decides who underwrites your policy: CSAA Insurance Exchange in much of the west, Auto Club Insurance Association through The Auto Club Group, the Interinsurance Exchange of the Automobile Club in Southern California. A few clubs sell other carriers’ policies as an agency instead. So there is no national AAA insurer to compare, and a AAA quote in one state tells you very little about a AAA quote in another.

Insurance Company Comparisons

Use these head-to-head comparisons to understand key differences in pricing approach, discount availability, coverage options, and customer experience. For the fairest comparison, match coverage limits and deductibles. No study ranks two named companies on price for your own profile, so treat these as background and let two real quotes settle it.

Auto Insurance Company Discount Offerings

Discounts can vary by state, driving profile, and eligibility rules. Use these guides to see common discount categories and questions to ask when you request a quote. Three of the guides below (Safeco, MetLife and Safe Auto) are for brands you can no longer buy, and are kept for existing policyholders.

My advice is to read the review for background and then call or quote the company before you get attached to it. Half the work of shopping insurance is finding out who will actually write you a policy where you live.
