What Discounts Does Safeco Offer for Auto Insurance?

Last Updated on March 31, 2023

If you want to pay less for vehicle insurance, it’s always a good idea to learn about a company’s policies and discounts before buying. Safeco, of the parent group Liberty Mutual, offers auto insurance in most of the United States and has a good consumer rating. Fewer complaints are registered with Safeco than other comparable companies. If you’re looking for good insurance but want some discounts in order to keep things affordable, Safeco might have what you need. There are three ways to drive down your insurance costs: discounts, safety rewards, and lowering your rate. We’ll look at all three more closely.

1. Safeco Discounts

Safeco discountsFirst up are the discounts; remember that unless you ask, you won’t get them. So don’t be shy with your agent: be smart, be informed, and watch your insurance bill shrink significantly.

Package Deal Discount

This discount can cut your insurance costs by a whopping 15%. All you have to do is combine your vehicle insurance with your home insurance policy. Called the Safeco Package, you can insure your boat, car, and RV, and if an event causes damage to your home and your vehicle, you only pay one single deductible, which can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. And of course, there is the convenience factor: instead of all kinds of policies, renewal dates, and payment dates, everything will be in one place. Less expensive and convenient – what’s not to like?

Own Your Home Discount

If you live in and own your own house, condominium, townhouse, or mobile home, you’ll qualify for this discount. While the savings are listed as “significant”, you’ll need to speak to an agent to get the specific amount you’ll be saving.

Drive Less, Pay Less Discount

If you want to save up to another 20% on your car insurance bill, consider walking, biking, or taking public transport once in a while to keep your car’s mileage low. If you don’t drive that often, or only go short distances, demand this discount when you negotiate with your agent. It can cut costs by one-fifth, which is huge.

Multiple Vehicles Discount

Don’t waste time getting different policies from different companies if you have more than one car. It’s easier to do everything in one place, and best of all, it will be cheaper. Your agent will have more information.

Theft Deterrent Discount

As with most vehicle insurers, Safeco also offers discounts if you take specific anti-theft measures. Your car will need to be equipped with an audible alarm or a device that disables the starting system, fuel system, or ignition. Examples of theft prevention devices include steering wheel locks, tire locks, and kill switches. Call your agent to find out if your theft deterrent qualifies.

Anti-lock Brakes Discount

While it is not available in all states, you might qualify for this discount if your vehicle is set up with a four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) that was factory installed. It must be stressed that aftermarket ABS do not qualify. A Safeco agent will be able to provide more information on this and other money-saving methods.

Safeco RightTrack

Formerly known as Safeco Rewind, RightTrack is a telematics program that rewards you for safe driving. To enroll, you need to either plug-in the RightTrack device to your vehicle or download the RightTrack mobile app. RightTrack will then track your driving habits and reward you if you are a safe driver. Safeco claims drivers can save up to 30% on their auto insurance premiums depending on their results.

2. Safety Rewards and Teen Safety Rewards

Technically, they are not discounts, but rewards are also a good way to keep your costs as low as possible. You get these rewards by being a good, considerate driver. Being safe saves you money.

Preventive Driving Course Reward

Safety pays! Safeco will reward mature drivers in most states with a discount lasting up to three years if they take an accident prevention driving course. You’ve got to be 55 years old or older and complete a course that is approved by Safeco. You can find more information about defensive driving course discounts here.

Safe Driving Reward

Safeco has a range of rewards and discounts for careful drivers. Safeco Safety Rewards is a trademarked program that includes a diminishing deductible at renewal time if you don’t make claims, and accident forgiveness in certain situations. There are more safe driving rewards available, but you’ll need to contact an agent to get the details.

Teen Safety Rewards

Here is where savings can really add up if you have a young, new driver in your family. There are good student discounts, driver training discounts, distant student discounts, newly independent discounts, new teen driver discounts, and a tenure reward. Interestingly, Safeco offers several driving programs; once completed you might be able to save 30% on your premium. In all, you teen drivers learn how to be safe on the road, and you save money – the best of both worlds!

3. Lower Your Rate with Safeco

Finally, while these aren’t discounts at all, they are the traditional ways to keep your insurance costs within budget. You simply lower your rate. Here are two ways to do that.

Increase Your Deductible

Easy-peasy: to lower your rate, you increase your out-of-pocket costs when you make a claim. In other words, if you have a zero deductible, you pay nothing if you make a claim, but your premium will be more expensive. If you have a $1000 deductible to pay before your insurance kicks in, your premiums will be lower. If you feel that you can afford the one-off cost of a higher deductible if you need to ever make a claim, this method of lowering your premiums might be for you.

Pay in Full

Paying upfront instead of paying in monthly installments is easier because you don’t have to remind yourself to pay your insurance bill 12 times a year. But it isn’t just easier; it’s cheaper, too. That’s because Safeco will give you a significant discount if you pay all at once. You can get more details from a Safeco agent who will be happy to help you.

To Wrap Things Up

Safeco, a part of the Liberty Mutual family, is a solid insurance company that has been around for almost a century. Customers are generally satisfied with their policies and service, and while you get great coverage, you can also get good deals if you ask for discounts and rewards.  When it comes to insurance and safety, Safeco does appear to be a safe bet.
