Walmart is known for discount pricing on everything. But does Walmart offer car insurance? Can you buy car insurance through Walmart?
Walmart does not sell car insurance, although the company has occasionally dabbled in the insurance market.
In 2014, Walmart briefly partnered with a car insurance website to sell car insurance in 8 states. As of 2020, Walmart does not directly sell car insurance in any state, although they might refer customers to insurance partners in certain states.

Walmart Briefly Sold Car Insurance Online in 2014
When you search ‘Walmart car insurance’ online, you might find references to a 2014 partnership with AutoInsurance.com. In 2014, Walmart joined AutoInsurance.com to offer car insurance to customers at “everyday low prices.”
Through the partnership, Walmart recommended car insurance from major national carriers like Progressive, Esurance, Safeco, Travelers, and 21st Century.
Walmart never sold car insurance directly. Instead, it directed customers through Walmart.com or in-store to buy car insurance from AutoInsurance.com.
Walmart only launched the car insurance partnership in 8 states, including Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas. At the time of the launch, Walmart announced plans to expand nationwide and add more carriers.
As far as we can tell, this partnership never amounted to much. Years later, Walmart does not seem to directly or indirectly sell car insurance in any state.
Walmart Offers Discount Insurance to Employees
Walmart does not sell car insurance to customers, although Walmart offers insurance discounts to employees. If you qualify for the Walmart benefits plan, then you, your spouse, and your dependent children are eligible for group insurance discounts.
Walmart offers discounted rates on home and auto insurance through its employee benefits program.
This group insurance works similarly to other group insurance plans. Walmart is America’s largest company by far, allowing Walmart to negotiate group insurance rates with carriers. Walmart employees can take advantage of this program to enjoy discounted rates.
Walmart Delivery Insurance
If you deliver items for Walmart, you must insure the delivery vehicle. Unfortunately, Walmart does not sell auto insurance, so to be insured while delivering items for Walmart, you will need to buy a separate insurance policy.
The easiest way to get coverage for your delivery vehicle is to add a rideshare endorsement to your existing personal auto insurance policy. Many auto insurance companies offer this endorsement as a way for policyholders to safely start delivering items for companies such as Amazon, Uber, and Walmart. If your insurer does not offer this endorsement, you must search for a standalone commercial insurance policy to remain covered while delivering for Walmart.
Walmart Car Insurance Discounts
You do not get a car insurance discount for shopping at Walmart, nor do you qualify for any special discounts for being a Walmart customer.
While competing retailers like Costco, BJ’s, and Sam’s Club may offer car insurance discounts or special car insurance, Walmart has no such discount.
Will Walmart Ever Offer Car Insurance?
It’s possible Walmart may offer car insurance in the future, although the company does not appear to have any plans to launch car insurance.
As of June 2020, Walmart has not announced any plans to launch car insurance.
Car Insurance Discounts for Walmart Customers
Shopping at Walmart won’t give you a discount on car insurance, but Walmart shoppers can still get ordinary car insurance discounts.
Car insurance discounts available to Walmart customers include the following:
Bundling Discounts: Bundle home and auto insurance policies to save money on both.
Safe Driving Discounts: Avoid making a claim for three or more years to save money on car insurance.
Good Student Discounts: If you have a B+ average or higher in college or high school, you may qualify for a good student discount.
Safety Device Discounts: Does your car have anti-lock brakes or other security features? You may qualify for safety device discounts.
Anti-Theft Discounts: Cars with anti-theft alarms and other features may qualify for additional discounts.
Paid in Full Discounts: If you pay your car insurance premiums in full upfront (instead of paying monthly), then you may receive a small discount on insurance.
Profession Discounts: Doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers, firefighters, soldiers, and other professionals may qualify for unique car insurance discounts.
None of these discounts are unique to Walmart customers or employees. As long as you have car insurance, you can qualify for any of the discounts above.
