Mercury Auto Insurance Review

Last Updated on October 7, 2026

Mercury General Corporation (Mercury Insurance) was founded in 1961 by George Joseph and now gives its corporate address as Brea, California, having long been a Los Angeles company. Mercury sells auto insurance in 11 states through a network of local, independent agents. Alongside car insurance it writes home, condo, renters and business coverage.

If you live in Mercury’s coverage area and prefer working with a local agent instead of buying entirely online, Mercury can be a strong option, especially if you qualify for discounts, drive fewer miles, or need add-ons like its Ride-Hailing Coverage for Uber and Lyft drivers.

Our Rating of Mercury Insurance

Mercury is a regional auto insurer that sells through independent agents and offers a strong mix of standard coverage and add-ons in 11 states.

Summary

Bottom line: Mercury is a strong fit for drivers in its 11-state footprint who want agent guidance, broad discounts, and practical add-ons like Ride-Hailing Coverage.

Mercury offers standard auto coverages plus optional extras like rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, Ride-Hailing Coverage for Uber and Lyft drivers, and Mechanical Protection. Its best-published feature is the repair guarantee: use a Mercury authorized shop and Mercury guarantees the repairs for as long as you own the vehicle. Availability, discounts and digital tools vary by state, so the experience depends on where you live. AM Best affirmed Mercury’s A (Excellent) financial strength rating and restored a stable outlook in February 2026, after a year on negative outlook following the January 2025 California wildfires.

Best for

  • Drivers who prefer working with an independent agent
  • Low-mileage drivers or those open to usage-based/telematics programs
  • Drivers who want add-ons like rental reimbursement, roadside assistance or Ride-Hailing Coverage

Not ideal for

  • Drivers outside Mercury’s 11-state service area
  • Shoppers who want a consistent, fully online buying experience in every state
  • Drivers uncomfortable with mileage/telematics data-sharing programs

Mercury Auto Insurance at a Glance

  • Availability: Auto coverage in 11 states (regional carrier, not nationwide).
  • Best For: Drivers who want agent support and practical add-ons like rental reimbursement and Ride-Hailing Coverage.
  • Standout Features: Repairs at a Mercury authorized shop guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle, two savings programs (RealDrive, a California low-mileage program advertised at up to 20% off, and MercuryGO for driving behavior) and a broad discount menu.

Where Mercury Auto Insurance Is Available

Mercury sells personal auto insurance in the following states:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Oklahoma
  • Texas
  • Virginia

Keep in mind: coverages, discounts, and even the ability to buy online can vary by state. If you’re unsure what’s offered where you live, your agent can confirm what’s available and what’s not.

Types of Auto Insurance Coverage Offered by Mercury

Mercury offers the same “core” coverages you’ll see with most major insurers, plus a handful of useful extras. Depending on your state, you can buy anything from minimum liability to full coverage.

  • Liability Coverage: Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. This includes bodily injury liability and property damage liability.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Helps pay for non-collision losses like theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, and many weather-related claims. Learn how comprehensive coverage works.
  • Collision Coverage: Helps repair or replace your vehicle after an at-fault accident (or a single-car collision). Here’s what collision coverage typically includes.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: Helps protect you if you’re hit by a driver with no insurance (or not enough). See whether uninsured motorist coverage makes sense in your state.
  • Medical Payments (MedPay): Helps pay medical bills for you and passengers after an accident—regardless of fault. More on medical payments coverage.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): In “no-fault” states, PIP can help cover medical costs and sometimes lost wages. Here’s a breakdown of personal injury protection.

Optional Add-Ons and Extras Worth Considering

Optional coverages can make a policy much more useful in real life. With Mercury, these are some of the most common add-ons drivers ask about:

  • Roadside Assistance: Helpful for towing, lockouts, jump-starts, and flat tires. If you’re comparing add-ons, start with Mercury’s roadside assistance coverage details.
  • Rental Car Reimbursement: Covers a rental car while yours is being repaired after a covered claim. Mercury names it as an available extra but publishes no daily limit and no maximum number of days, so get both figures on your declarations page before you rely on it.
  • Ride-Hailing Coverage (Uber/Lyft): Mercury’s name for its rideshare add-on. The gap it describes is the one every rideshare driver runs into: “You drive for a TNC and get in a car collision with the app on but haven’t accepted a fare.” Mercury doesn’t publish which states sell it, so ask your agent. If you’re new to gig driving, read this first: Will my insurance cover me if I start driving for Uber or Lyft?
  • Mechanical Protection: Works like an extended warranty. Mercury’s page lists engine components (crankshaft, pistons, timing gears), automatic and manual transmissions, drive axles, electrical, air conditioning, fuel delivery, steering, suspension and brakes, and excludes routine wear items. It publishes no vehicle age or mileage cutoff, so ask whether your car qualifies. Learn the basics of mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI).

What Makes Mercury Auto Insurance Different?

Mercury isn’t trying to be the biggest insurer in the country. Instead, it competes as a regional carrier with a heavy agent focus and a few benefits that stand out—especially in California.

  • Guaranteed Repairs at Authorized Shops: Mercury’s own wording is the clearest version of this: “When you choose a Mercury authorized repair shop, Mercury guarantees the repairs for as long as you own the vehicle.” You still have the right to pick your own shop; the guarantee is what you give up by doing it.
  • Two Savings Programs, Not One: RealDrive is a mileage program and MercuryGO is a behavior-tracking app. Mercury’s own FAQ puts it bluntly: asked whether RealDrive is the same as telematics, it answers “Not exactly.”
  • Agent Support: Mercury sells many policies through independent agents, which can be a big plus if you want help building the right coverage and applying discounts correctly.

RealDrive vs. MercuryGO: How Mercury’s Tracking Programs Work

Mercury offers more than one way to potentially save based on how (or how much) you drive. The key is understanding what each program measures and whether it fits your comfort level.

RealDrive

RealDrive is a California program for drivers who log fewer miles, not a national one. Mercury’s own wording is that it is “an easy way for Californians to save up to 20% more on auto insurance.” The concept is simple: lower mileage means lower risk. Two rules matter. Mercury may ask for an odometer reading before renewal, in its words, “Once enrolled, we may need you to provide your odometer reading before your renewal, but we’ll send you a note to let you know well in advance.” And every eligible vehicle on the policy has to be enrolled: “All eligible vehicles must participate in the program in order to qualify and continue in the program.”

MercuryGO

MercuryGO is an app-based program that can measure driving behaviors (like braking, acceleration, and speeding) to calculate a driving score and potential discount. Like most telematics programs, availability and savings depend on your state and driving profile. If you’re on the fence, start here: Is usage-based car insurance right for you?

Mercury Auto Insurance Discounts

Discounts can make or break your final premium—especially as rates have risen across the industry. Mercury offers a wide discount menu, and your exact options depend on your state, vehicle, and driver profile. Here’s an overview of Mercury insurance discounts.

Common Mercury auto discounts include:

Other discounts may include pay-in-full, paperless/e-signature, vehicle safety features, EV discounts, and state-specific programs. The fastest way to confirm everything you qualify for is to ask an agent for a full discount review.

How Much Does Mercury Auto Insurance Cost?

Mercury’s pricing varies widely by state and driver profile (age, ZIP code, driving record, vehicle, coverage limits, and deductibles). It’s also important to zoom out: auto insurance rates have increased significantly in recent years, so older “average premium” numbers are often misleading.

Instead of relying on a single national average, use Mercury’s quote as a benchmark and compare it to at least 2–3 other insurers with the same coverage limits. And if you’re shopping in California, Mercury is commonly included among competitive options—start your comparisons here: best car insurance in California.

Mercury Customer Experience: Claims, Repairs, and Digital Tools

Mercury markets a few practical features that matter when you actually need to use your policy:

  • 24/7 Claims Reporting: Mercury offers around-the-clock claims reporting (exact options vary by state and claim type).
  • Repair Network Options: You typically have the right to choose your repair shop, but using an authorized shop may come with added guarantees.
  • Mobile App Support: Mercury’s app can help with basics like proof of insurance, bills, and policy access (features vary by state).

Mercury Reviews and Third-Party Ratings

Like most insurers, Mercury’s customer experience can look very different depending on where you live, your claim type, and how complex your situation is.

J.D. Power publishes an annual Auto Insurance Study ranking customer satisfaction by region, and not every insurer appears in every region. Mercury is not among the regional winners in the 2026 study, published June 9, 2026. Those went to Wawanesa in California, Shelter in the Central region, Florida Farm Bureau in Florida, Erie in the Mid-Atlantic, North Central and Southeast, Amica in New England, Travelers in New York, State Farm in the Northwest, CSAA in the Southwest, the Automobile Club of Southern California in Texas and Nationwide for usage-based insurance. That is not a mark against Mercury, which competes in only 11 states, but it does mean there is no J.D. Power ranking to look up for it.

On the financial side the story has a beginning and an end. In February 2025, A.M. Best revised Mercury’s outlooks to negative while affirming its Financial Strength Rating at A (Excellent), citing uncertainty over net losses and reinsurance costs from the California wildfires that began that January, with gross catastrophe losses estimated at $1.6 to $2.0 billion before reinsurance. On February 24, 2026 it put the outlooks back to stable and affirmed the same ratings, saying the ratings “reflect Mercury’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.”

Mercury also points to a Forbes award, though it is older than it sounds: it was named to Forbes’ World’s Best Insurance Companies list in 2023 in the auto category. Forbes and Statista surveyed 30,000 policyholders across 15 countries in March and April that year, scoring companies on advice, customer service, price, transparency and claims service, with a minimum of 70 points out of 100 to make the list.

Pros and Cons of Mercury Insurance

  • Strong discount potential and agent guidance to apply discounts correctly
  • Repairs at a Mercury authorized shop are guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle
  • A (Excellent) financial strength rating from A.M. Best, with a stable outlook restored in February 2026
  • Two savings programs: RealDrive for low mileage (California) and MercuryGO for driving behavior

Cons

  • Limited availability (only 11 states)
  • Coverage options, discounts, and online purchasing tools vary by state
  • Telematics/usage programs aren’t a fit for every driver (privacy and data-sharing comfort levels vary)

FAQs on Mercury Auto Insurance

Final Word on Mercury Insurance

Mercury can be a smart choice if you live in one of its 11 states and want agent support, practical add-ons, and discount opportunities. The best way to know if it’s “worth it” is to compare Mercury’s quote to similar coverage from other insurers and make sure you’re getting the right limits—not just the lowest price.

If you have questions about quotes, billing, or claims, start here: Mercury customer service contact information.

My advice is to ask the agent for the rental reimbursement limit and the Ride-Hailing Coverage answer in writing before you bind. Those are the two things Mercury doesn’t publish, and they are the two most likely to matter later.
