How to Use the U.S. Travel Map
How many U.S. states have you actually experienced? Choose Visited, Lived In, Drove Thru / Layover, or Never Been, then tap each state on the map to build your personal travel history.
As you fill in the map, you’ll see how many states you’ve been to and a breakdown of how many you’ve visited, lived in, or driven through. When you’re finished, download your map or share your challenge with friends.
What Counts as “Visited”?
There aren’t any strict rules—it’s your travel map. If you spent meaningful time in a state, explored a city, stayed overnight, visited friends or family, or took a trip there, mark it as Visited.
If you actually called the state home at some point, choose Lived In instead.
What About Driving Through a State or an Airport Layover?
That’s exactly what Drove Thru / Layover is for.
Use it for states where you passed through on a road trip, changed planes at an airport, stopped briefly while traveling, or otherwise entered the state without really visiting it.
That way, someone who changed planes in Denver doesn’t have to count Colorado the same way as someone who spent a week exploring the state.
What Does “Been To” Mean?
Your Been To total includes every state you’ve marked as Visited, Lived In, or Drove Thru / Layover.
For example, if you’ve visited 20 states, lived in 4, and driven through 6 more, your total would be 30/50 states.
It’s a simple way to see how much of the United States you’ve experienced while still keeping the different types of travel separate.
Download and Share Your Map
Once you’ve finished, select Download My Map to save a shareable image showing your map, total states, and travel breakdown.
You can post it on social media, send it in a group chat, or share it with friends and family to compare where everyone has been.
Challenge Your Friends
You can also send your personalized challenge link directly to someone else.
They’ll see your completed map first, then they can select Make My Map to create their own version and see if they’ve been to more states.
You can even customize the map title to create your own challenges, such as States We’ve Visited Together, States I’ve Road Tripped In, or anything else you can come up with.
Why Did Insurance Panda Make This?
We spend a lot of time thinking about cars, drivers, road trips, and life on the road. We thought it would be fun to create a simple way to see just how much of America you’ve experienced.
The map is free to use, no account is required, and your state selections are stored directly in the challenge link you choose to share.
